TAKE A STEP BACK TO WHERE IT STARTED

It was August 1988 and I always listened to Marley Marl on Wbls radio station in NYC. He had the in control radio show on Friday and Saturday nights. He announced he was looking for new talent to be on his In control volume 2 album. I was hanging with my homie Jr. who I grew up with on my block. We was doing the usual shit hanging on the block music blasting talking shit. He told me when he heard that "yo man Domingo thats your break right there we should go and meet him". I was real reluctant to do it bc I was "rapping" at the time as a fun thing and really liked Djing and making my own beats with a 4 track recorder my grandmother bought me. Under the influence of my homie Jr and the shared bottle of Old english beer...yup the good ole 40 oz. He convinced me for us to grab his dads car and drive up to the radio station. When we got there of course there was a few people waiting outside the station to do what I exactly was trying to do. I admit I got discouraged at this point bc here I am a trying to "Rap" with my demo tape and I thought these kids here must be better then me. It was after midnight the show was over and I see marley come out of the elevator in the building and alongside him was LL Cool J. I was a huge LL fan back then and was trippin to see him in person but I wasnt the type to just go up to a person. I have and always been very lowkey when it comes to meeting people. So as Marley and LL stepped outside they got mobbed just as I expected by the other kids that was there. They all wa handing marley their demos in hopes of being that next star Marley would produce. My homie Jr was looking at me telling me "yo man nows ya chance" but, I didnt not want to approache Marley at that moment. I waited until he finished talking with LL and all the other kids that was there. As Marley said peace to everyone that was there and proceeded to walk away as he past me I tapped him on his arm and told him "Hey whats up my name is Domingo and I wanted to give you my demo tape". Marley said "is it hot?" I told him I think so and he told me he would give it a listen. Two days went by and I got a phone call from a lady named Francesca Spero who at the time was Marleys manager and she asked me to come to her office on Lafayette street in Manhattan. I went to the meeting and when she saw me she said"So your the Puerto rican kid Marley is ranting and raving about". I still did not know why I was called there but Marley called and told me he would be right there. When he got there he told me he loved my tape and wanted me on his next album. I was in total shock bc not only did I and I still do consider Marley the greatest hip hop producer ever he loves my demo. I admit I signed that contract on the spot I didnt know anything about lawyers or nothing and the fact that my idol was giving me a chance to rock with him was good for me no money was needed for that.
